The Panasonic Toughbook CF-18 Guide
This guide attempts to describe the setup and use of a Panasonic CF-18 Toughbook notebook under Linux, with a special eye on Debian.

The machine in question is one of the "Australian" used Toughbooks sold on Ebay. Its ID is CF-18DHB22KA, a custom series produced for the Australian telecom.

The Hardware:

Onboard Graphics The onboard Intel graphics card supports mild 3D acceleration
with a resolution of 1024x768 on a 10,4" display.
Touchscreen Works after a bit of xorg.conf hacking and a special calibration tool.
Hotkeys Most of them are working, but not all.
Onboard WLAN The internal Intel IPW2200BG module works OOTB with the native kernel ipw2200 driver.
Onboard LAN It's a Realtek RTL-8139 card using the native 8139too driver. Haven't had the chance to test it yet.
Onboard Sound Works fine with the Intel HDA Alsa driver.
BIOS & ACPI Suspend-to-ram and hibernate work as of kernel 2.6.30-rc2

The Software:

  • Recommended kernel: 2.6.30-rc2 and later
